Changing Farming Practices and Crop Rotation

The Diocese of Kagera is addressing urgent facing the farming communities in North West Tanzania through the Church and Community Mobilisation Process (CCMP).

We intend to support this work and partner with them in resourcing;

The Establishment of demonstration farms showing best practice on drip irrigation methods that use little water, harvested from the rains or from any source available.

Planting shorter germination crops like sweet potatoes, cassava, new potatoes and vegetable gardening of cabbages, carrot, tomatoes, onion and beans. Changing the type of seed used to cope with the climate change.

Applying crop rotation to maintain the quality of soil but many farmers have not much more than acre for farming and other requirements so this is difficult

Planting trees to protect soil and provide shades for plants

Using terraces and mulching grass strips to control water run off

Harvesting rainwater using gutters and tanks

Establishing self-help groups – small scale savings and loan schemes

Encouraging entrepreneurship for example young people have established for motorcycles driving business, selling of oil and petrol, hair saloons, small shops and business, small scale poultry keeping, beekeeping, selling food items across the roads and shops as a new income generating activities.
